Bangsokol is one of the first Cambodian compositions for a big orchestra. It portrays the tragedies that HIM Sophy has experienced, first during the civil war (1970-75) and then the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime (1975 - 79). The first movement is about the people killed without a proper funeral, so the souls keep wandering without peace - utterly alone. The following movements takes the listener through different phases with the last one being optimistic with the chaiyam drum playing and all performers singing together among the audience. Even though this composition is based on Him Sophy's life experience, it also represent the phases that all people in war go through, and acts as a warning for the rest of the world.
