HIM Sophy, from Survivor to Composer
HIM Sophy studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium in Moscow for 14 years. Upon his return to Cambodia in 1998, he collaborated with John Burt (producer), Catherine Filloux (librettist) and Robert McQueen (opera director) to produce the highly acclaimed "Where Elephants Weep, a Cambodian Rock Opera" that was performed in Lowell. Mass in 2007 and in Phnom Penh in 2008.
In 2014, HIM Sophy composed Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia, his second big composition mixing western classical and traditional Cambodian music, which was performed in Melbourne, New York and Boston in 2017, in Paris in 2018 and Phnom Penh in 2019.
What Are You Now is a play (by Sam Chanse) about a person who is traumatized and hears distorted versions of a pop song (composed by HIM Sophy in 2022), but at the end hears it as it was composed.
In 2025, HIM Sophy made a new arrangement of his The Way To Angkor, a symphony with traditional Cambodian instruments at the event of Musical Mosaics: Imagineasian

Press / Reviews
“Angelina Jolie described Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia as a deeply moving and impactful performance. She said it was "like an hour of meditation, dedicating merit and remembrance to the spirits of the dead, reflecting on Cambodia’s long and recent history, and leading us to a hopeful future"”
“ A Requiem for Cambodia is a Phoenix Rising from the Flames. This is one of the most poignant stage works I have seen in my life, which recently left BAM and goes on to tour parts of the US and Paris, before heading back to Cambodia.” - Huffington Post, 21 December 2017
